The Olga Havel Award 1996

Vojtěch Volejník was the laureate of the Olga Havel Award 1996.

On the 6th of May 1996, in the presence of President Václav Havel, the second year of The Olga Havel Award was held at the Bowling hall of Prague Castle. The sculpture made by Olbram Zoubek "Encouragement" was awarded to Vojtěch Volejník, deaf athlete and chairman of the Czech Paralympics Committee.

He was born in 1949 in Pardubice. In 1954, his family moved to Prague in order for their son with a hearing disorder to be able to attend special school for deaf students. After graduation he worked as a mechanic at Tesla Strašnice and since 1971 at Škoda Plzeň. Since 1976, he has been an active member of the Association of Deaf Athletes, and since 1991 begun to work for newly established Czech Union of Deaf Athletes. In 1994, he became the president of the Czech Paralympic Committee. His wife Mirka is also deaf and they have two grown up children Jiří and Monika. In 1995, his granddaughter Šárka was born.
