Second year of the Olga Havel Foundation Charity run in Liberec represented by motto “I run as much as I can - I help” organised by the non-profit organisation ESN Liberec at the Technical University in Liberec, raised almost CZK 30,000.
Even this year was the event held in the spirit of charity. Financial profit was provided to Ondřej from Liberec via the Committee of Good Will - Olga Havel Foundation (OHF) and was used for purchasing a wheelchair (last year CZK 20,000 was raised and provided to Alois from Liberec region for purchasing a wheelchair).
“The mission of the OHF Charity Run is to help anyone who needs it, to contribute to a good thing and to help others. In addition to the charitable dimension this run also promotes sport as an active form of relaxation,” says event organizer Veronika Černá, who pioneered the idea of the race. “The idea to organise the race came step by step. The OHF Charity Run takes place within SocialErasmus program, which idea is to involve foreign students in local community activities. They mainly include activities of educational and charitable character (walking dogs from shelters, lectures given by foreign students at secondary schools). Thanks to this program and beautiful surroundings of Harcov dormitories, an idea came to organise a race for foreign students. The idea was liked so much that we decided to organise a race as a public event and include a charitable dimension,” says Veronika Černá.
Veronika evaluates the second year very positively. She believes that the event went well and everybody was happy. “I think we were successful in promoting this run, because a lot of people learned about it from both the flyers that were posted in trams and Radio Contact broadcasting. Of course, there is room for improvement in the future,” says Veronika and adds information about the future plans: “I would like to enrich and extend an accompanying program so that the public, who does not participate actively in the race, could also enjoy a colourful program and have fun. I’d also like to attract more families with children, therefore next year we will focus on this as well. And of course I would like to see more participants in the race itself.”
Ondřej Veselý, recipient of this year contribution, also came to support the runners. “The charity run surprised me pleasantly with friendly atmosphere and good organisation. It was really amazing!” says Ondřej. Financial profit will help Ondřej to buy a new lightweight mechanical wheelchair. He was born with Cerebral Palsy and is permanently confined to a wheelchair. Despite his handicap he lives an active life, works, travels and does sports (he actively participated in a 100 m and 200 m races on a specially designed wheelchair ten years ago). The new lightweight wheelchair will help him in the everyday life. “I work as a sales assistant of new cars in Autotrend in Liberec and I live in a barrier-free apartment. Thanks very much to the organizers! I greatly appreciate what they managed to do for me. Keep it up!”
“This event could not happen without our volunteers from the student organisation ESN Liberec and our partners, who provided us with valuable prizes for winners and welcome packs. We must not also forget our media partner thanks to whom the awareness of the race was quite large and also support from the Technical University in Liberec and the city of Liberec,” says Veronika Černá.
