The Olga Havel Award 2010

The sixteenth laureate of the Olga Havel Award was Jiří Kříž.

On the 7th of June 2010, the sixteenth laureate of the Olga Havel Award was introduced. It was Jiří Kříž, primary doctor of the Spinal Unit at the Clinique of rehabilitation and physical education medicine, the 2nd Faculty of Medicine at the Charles University and Faculty Hospital Motol.

Out of 17 nominees, the judges selected and honoured Jiří Kříž for long-term support of paraplegics in the Czech Republic. 

Jiří Kříž was born on the 29th of April 1970 in Prague. After completing studies at the 3rd Faculty of Medicine at the Charles University, he worked at the Department of Orthopaedics in Pelhřimov, Orthopaedic and traumatology Clinique at the Faculty Hospital Královské Vinohrady, and private department of orthopaedics in Vysočany. In 2002, he had a skiing accident, which resulted in broken cervical vertebrates and damaged spinal cord followed by tetraplegia. After one year he returned to Orthopaedics Ambulance and begun to work for the Paraple Centre. In 2004, he was accepted to the newly established Spinal Unit at the Faculty Hospital Motol, and after few months became primary doctor. He still does the job today. He is completing postgraduate studies at the 2nd Faculty of Medicine, CU. He is head of the Czech Association for spinal cord lesions ČLS JEP, and head of the Board of Directors of the Foundation Pohyb bez pomoci (Motion without help). He is married and has 3 kids. In his free time he plays trombone and tries to stay active.
